Our preschool theme for April is "Cowboys, Dunes, and Deserts." While we live in Utah, which is itself technically a desert, and there are no doubt numerous authentic cowboys residing here, it was still a little tricky trying to decide on a field trip for this month. I didn't exactly want to drive to the middle of the Salt Flats to look at sand. One of the moms in our group suggested that we go to Cabelas, up by Thanksgiving Point. Not being a great outdoorsman (woman?) myself, I had actually never been there before our field trip, but it seemed like a good place to find cowboy attire and gear.
Actually, we learned that it wasn't (but a great place if you're looking for fishing or hunting gear), but we had a good time anyway. While we did not find a lot of things a cowboy might use, the kids did enjoy all of the animal exhibits (and one side of the big mountain was a desert landscape covered with desert animals the kids had learned about in preschool) and we had timed it right to be a the aquarium to see the fish fed. Here are a few pictures from our trip.
